Former Punjab CM Harcharan Singh Brar passes away

Former Punjab Chief Minister and ex-Haryana Governor Harcharan Singh Brar passed away at his native village Sarai Naga of Muktsar today after protracted illness. He was 87 years old. He breathed his last in Sarai Naga village in Punjab’s Muktsar district and would be cremated tomorrow.

A veteran Congress leader, Brar also held the post of Orissa Governor for six months in 1976. Brar, who played an instrumental role in creation of Muktsar district, is survived by his wife Gurbinder Kaur, son Kanwarjit Singh, an MLA, and daughter Kanwaljit.

Punjab government has declared three-day state mourning as a mark of respect to the departed leader. All government offices and educational institutions in the state will remain shut tomorrow. The Haryana government has also declared a two-day state mourning.
