Nandan Nilekani to head Unique ID Authority

India’s federal Cabinet has on Thursday said that it has appointed Nandan Nilekani as the chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India. The authority will help implement a scheme to assign a unique identification number to every Indian. It will also own and operate the database and maintain it.

Mr. Nilekani will have the rank of a Cabinet minister. Mr. Nilekani, who is the co-chairman and board member of Infosys Technologies Ltd., India’s second largest software company, will resign from both the posts, the company said in a separate statement.
